Nonfiction Structures & Text Features
Objective: To plan out our nonfiction books, drafting one chapter at a time using a variety of structures and text features within chapters.
Nonfiction Structures (all required for your nonfiction book):
- Descriptions or lists
- Sequence or Time Order
- Compare and contrast
- Cause and effect/ problem and solution
Text Features:
- The starred items are required for your book. The items starred twice are required for every chapter.
- Table of Contents*
- Headings (chapter titles)**
- Subheadings**
- Photos or pictures **
- Captions **
- Diagrams with labels
- Maps
- Glossary*
- Index
Special Text Features:
- You must use at least five of the following special text features in your book.
- Pop ups
- Flaps
- Spin wheels
- Envelopes
- Pull tabs
- Mini books
- Other
To Do:
- Plan out your structures and text features for each chapter.
Example:
Chapter 1: Young Henry VIII
- Picture of young Henry VIII
- Caption
- Mini book about King Arthur
- Timeline of his reign
Chapter 2: Catherine of Aragon
- Venn diagram comparing marriages
