Nonfiction Structures & Text Features

Objective: To plan out our nonfiction books, drafting one chapter at a time using a variety of structures and text features within chapters.

Nonfiction Structures (all required for your nonfiction book):
  1. Descriptions or lists
  2. Sequence or Time Order
  3. Compare and contrast
  4. Cause and effect/ problem and solution

Text Features:
  • The starred items are required for your book. The items starred twice are required for every chapter.
  • Table of Contents*
  • Headings (chapter titles)**
  • Subheadings**
  • Photos or pictures **
  • Captions **
  • Diagrams with labels
  • Maps
  • Glossary*
  • Index

Special Text Features:
  • You must use at least five of the following special text features in your book.
  • Pop ups
  • Flaps
  • Spin wheels
  • Envelopes
  • Pull tabs
  • Mini books
  • Other

To Do:
  1. Plan out your structures and text features for each chapter.
 

Example:

Chapter 1: Young Henry VIII
  • Picture of young Henry VIII
  • Caption
  • Mini book about King Arthur
  • Timeline of his reign

Chapter 2: Catherine of Aragon
  • Venn diagram comparing marriages
