Note-Taking Strategies

Objective: To learn several note-taking strategies to use while researching nonfiction topics.

1. The Cornell Method:
  • Use the main section for notes
  • Use the left margin for questions/topics corresponding to notes
  • Write the summary of your notes at the bottom

2. The Mapping Method
  • Start with the main topic
  • Branch off the main topic, creating subtopics
  • Write important notes under each subtopic
  • Continue the pattern

3. The Outlining Method
  • Begin with the main topic
  • Place the first subtopic below and indented to the right
  • List any details below your subtopic and slightly to the right

4. The Charting Method
  • The page is divided into columns by category
  • The details of each category are filled out in the rows below
