Selecting a Topic

Objective: To explore several possible topics to write about and select a topic, focusing and narrowing it to the most interesting aspects of the topic.

1. Ask yourself… if I had to teach a course to other kids in the class, what might I teach?
Consider your expertise and what your audience is interested in.
  • King Henry VIII
  • Sharks
  • Horror Genre
  • Basketball
2. Narrow your topic by writing sub-topics
  • King Henry VIII-- his wives-- how the marriages ended
  • Sharks-- Great White Sharks--- their interactions with humans
  • The horror genre--vampires-- how the legend started
  • Basketball-- Chicago Bulls--winning three championships in a row
3. Write 2 potential back of the book blurbs as a way to imagine how your books might go and why those books would interest readers.

Example Book Blurb:
Today, many celebrities collect marriages the way most people collect baseball cards or shoes. King Henry VIII started this trend in the 1500s, centuries before Elizabeth Taylor got married and divorced seven times. How did King Henry VIII go through so many wives during a time in history when marriage was considered sacred and almost unbreakable? This question and others will be explored in this book.
